Review: The Death of Wolverine

He’s dead! He’s finally dead! *Pops a bottle of champagne and feels up Jubilee without hesitation*

That’s right “true believers”, Marvel has killed off Wolverine. After years of being ridden harder than Marsellous Wallace during the basement scene in pulp fiction, Marvel put their former cash cow out to pasture. 

Let me start by saying by no means do I hate Wolverine. As a matter of fact, I loved him from the first time I saw him on the X-Men animated series. I hate that he’s been whored out to the entire Marvel Universe. After years of over use in multiple books including Uncanny X-Men, X-Men, Wolverine and the X-Men, Amazing X-Men, Astonishing X-Men, New X-Men, X-Force, Uncanny X-Force, Uncanny Avengers, Avengers, New Avengers, Wolverine, The Savage Wolverine, Wolverine Origins, (Just) Origin, and Wolverine: first class he can finally get some rest. 

Wolverine started out as a thug. The first X-Man to kill without hesitation and with no consequence. Marvel's coolest anti-hero. But over the years as his popularity grew, his persona was toned down for the masses to accept and he became a simp. He’s lost what made him a great character… he was a mysterious killer with a blank past. Plain and simple. I saw his downfall coming when Marvel "declawed" our boy and made him head of a school named after a chick that gave him no play. Took away his healing factor and then kicked him out of the Avengers. That was publication suicide if I ever saw it.

I haven’t read a Wolverine solo book in about a decade, but to be honest I feel the Watcher got a better send off than Logan. The book seemed to rushed as I had to keep up with Logan gallivanting around the globe trying to find who's trying to killed him in only four issues. A story that I'm sure has been told in a dozen Wolverine books over the years. Every one of his villains makes an appearance in what seemed so forced and manufactured its hard to read. (EVEN CYBER MADE THE PARTY! WTF!? I'VE ONLY SEEN HIM ON TRADING CARDS) 

The best part of the mini series was Wolverine's actual death. I had a theory that they weren't going to actually kill him and he was going to retire the mantel and take up teaching full-time and be the next Xavier. I was wrong... They killed him. I mean really killed him. Let me explain this like we are playing Clue: It was Marvel, in the refurbished Weapon-X facility with an adamantium shower. When it comes superhero deaths it's not about the death it's about the come back and Wolverine died in a way that will take some major thinking to bring him back and I can't wait to see when and how.

 My prediction: 2019

Overall, The death of Wolverine was Marvel's "The Passion of the Christ". A four issue mini series that worked as a glorified snuff film. No story or real plot involved it was just Jesus walking to his crucifixion. No tricks. The series does little to draw readers in or keep them interested. You can pass on reading it. Wolverine dies and that's all you need to know.

In the meantime, you diehard Wolverine fans will have to be content with a few new books that take the place of wolverines solo books including:

• Death of Wolverine: Logan's Legacy - Read about wolverine's closest friends and worst enemies deal with his death and not give a fuck about it in their regular books. 
• Wolverines - A team book with a roster of Wolverine specific frenemies
• Uncanny Avengers -Witness most interesting roster change up as Wolverine is replaced by Sabertooth?
